What's this all about?

We love whole grains! We have found that we prefer their flavor. They are also far healthier than the refined foods which characterize the typical modern diet.

Switching to whole grains helps maintain a low glycemic diet. That means you will have more sustainable energy levels throughout the day, and probably fewer problems with weight control.

We created this website with one goal: to build an online community of like-minded people who either share our enthusiasm about whole grains or just want to learn more about them.

honey oatmeal cookie

These little 'cookies' are almost too healthy to be called a cookie. My Dad has been on a life long search for a cookie that wasn't too sweet so after playing around with the ingredients I have finally achieved what he wanted. In fact, he thinks they are so good and nutritious he thinks we should call them a Nutritional Supplement!

There is no sugar in this recipe however if you prefer sugar to honey--then simply alter the recipe....cut the baking soda to 1/4 tsp. and add an extra tablespoon of water. Your baking temperature should go to 350 if you are using sugar.

When replacing sugar with honey you have to increase the baking soda to increase the acid and you reduce liquid by 1 Tablespoon. Also, with honey baking--lower the baking temp.

Editor's note:

I made these today for my preschooler with the following modifications:

  • used white whole wheat flour (it's what I had)
  • increased the oats by 1/4 cup
  • scooped tablespoons full, and did not press with fork (fuller rounder cookie)

They are not as sweet as most oatmeal cookies I've had, which is a good thing. We could not stop eating them; especially my preschooler. They are excellent "nutritional supplements!" Thanks again for sharing them, LCheliak!

Healthy Oatmeal Cookies (with Honey)

Ingredients:

Dry ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (a pinch more depending on the moisture of the mix)
  • 1 1/2 cups of Large Flake Rolled Oats (smaller flake is ok too)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp Cinnamon (I actually use about 3 Tbsp--got to love cinnamon)
  • 1/2 tsp Nutmeg (optional)

Wet ingredients

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup oil (corn, grapeseed or olive) * you can also use some applesauce to replace some of the oil if you wish*
  • 1 Tablespoon Molasses
  • 1 egg (beat with 1 Tbsp Water)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla

Yummy ingredients

  • 1/2 cup raisins (1 cup for my Dad's batch)
  • 1/2 cup walnuts (more for my Dad's)!!

Preparation:

  1. In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix all the wet ingredients together. Hint: when measuring out the honey, spray the measuring cup with oil or baking spray--your honey won't stick).
  3. Mix the wet stuff with the dry stuff. Add the raisins and walnuts and mix. If the mixture seems too wet, add a bit of flour. If it isn't binding together very well, you may wish to add an egg white.
  4. COOL the mix for 20 minutes in the fridge.
  5. Preheat the oven to 335 degrees (lower temperature due to the honey in the recipe which will burn more easily).
  6. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto your baking sheet (I recommend lining the baking sheet with parchment paper). Press down with a fork to ensure even cooking.
  7. Bake for about 15 - 20 minutes or until golden on the bottom of the cookie. The cookies freeze very well and make a great snack! Enjoy.

Yummy! Great recipe! I really love healthy snacks and this one is very versatile. I substituted coconut oil for olive oil and also oatmeal flour for 1/2 of the wheat flour just because I had it on hand. I also added shredded coconut, one small finely chopped green apple, and some dates along with the pecans. DELICIOUS!!! I look forward to experimenting with more variations of this recipe for more great and creative snacks! Thanks for sharing!

Sissy: not sure about the calorie content, but if I remember correctly, I was able to make 27 cookies with this recipe. I rolled them in 1" balls with my hands and pressed them down slightly before baking.

This is maybe the 4th time I've ever tried baking something, and I'm so glad I tried this tonight.

I had a few variations since a) I like lots of spices, and b) I didn't have everything listed.
1) Didn't have enough honey, maybe only 1/4 cup- substituted Agave nectar to top off the rest of the 1/2 cup.
2) I didn't have any molasses, so I used brown sugar instead.
3) Instead of plain water for the egg and the brown sugar substitute, I nuked a teabag of Celestial Seasonings Mandarin Orange Spice herbal tea in about a 1/4 cup of water. After letting it cool in the fridge, I used it between beating the egg, making the molasses subst. with the brown sugar, and some "just for good measure" into the rest of the mixture.
4) Added a 1/8 to 1/4 tsp All Spice (I bought it awhile back, and never knew what to do with it - it smelled nice and cookie-like)
5) Added a 1/8 to 1/4 tsp of "Oriental Five Spices" - same as above - I want to use these things up before they go bad!
6) ~ 1/8 tsp of powdered dried ginger - what the heck, why not.
7) Substituted 1/4 cup of the oatmeal with "Organic High-Fiber Cereal and Flax-seed" mix. I would have used more, but I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out - I also hadn't noticed the other comments saying I wasn't the first to try something similar.
8) Couldn't find the Vanilla Extract - Coconut Extract worked fine.
9) Just to make my girlfriend happy, I added about a 1/2 tbs of a dark-chocolate cocoa mix.
10) I opted to use the nutmeg.

Lots of delicious flavor, and not overly sweet. Most of the extras only give subtle hints of flavor, just the way I hoped for. For my 4th time baking in my life, it was an absolute success, if I do say so myself.
Thanks!

Oh, additionally, I'm thinking of using some shredded carrot in it next time - perhaps substituting it for some of the other sweetners.
I didn't get that part of the "increase baking soda to increase acid ..." in the directions - what's the acid do? The chemistry of cooking is too confusing for me. :-{

My 5yo's pediatrician suggested I make him some whole gran oatmeal cookies since he is struggling with constipation. I have made these 3 times this week, my whole family loves them. Even my husbands co-workers cant get enough of them.

These are delicious! I used 1/4 cup honey and 2 Splendas and added a pinch of ginger and allspice, but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. The cookies came out lightly sweet, chewy, and satisfying. Thank you!

I would like to know if these actually taste like a cookie, or if they taste more like a fruit/grain bar or something similar? I am looking for an oatmeal recipe to make that is healthy... not too much sugar and definitely no artificial sweeteners.

I made these cookies today..yum! I used 1/4 cup honey and 1/4 cup brown sugar (didn't have enough honey) and added an extra egg white (per recipe suggestion to hold dough together) and they turned out great. My yield was 32 little cookies, and according to a nutrition info calculator I ran the recipe through, each has 92 calories, 5 g fat, 3.5 grams sugar, 1.4 grams fiber and 1.6 grams protein.

I made these last night. The flavor is wonderful, and they smelled heavenly while baking, but they came out cakey. They had the consistency more of muffins than of cookies -- more "soft and puffy" than "chewy." I followed the recipe exactly except used 1/4 cup applesauce, 1/4 cup olive oil. Any ideas? Should I cut back on the flour a bit? Less baking powder/soda?

These are wonderful! I didn't have molasses, so just omitted
it. I didn't have vanilla so I used almond extract. Delicious!

Made the cookies w/olive oil - which I didn't like. All I tasted was the olive oil. I also increased the cinnamon to 2 heaping tablespoon. Can't even taste the cinnamon for the olive oil. Next time, I'll try regular Canola oil, hoping they will come out better.
